The playbook is organised around two complementary ideas: the Psychosocial Safety Compliance Maturity Journey (how maturity and impact builds over time) and Compliance Categories (the building blocks you use at every stage). This helps teams see both where they are now and what to do next.

Compliance Maturity Journey

The maturity journey reflects how psychosocial safety evolves — from reactive compliance to proactive, prevention-led practice embedded in daily work. Each stage clarifies ownership, artefacts, and assurance, helping teams understand what “good” looks like, evidence progress, and sustain compliance through continuous improvement.

Reliant on existing systems: Reactive approach. WHS and HR rely on general systems, and mental health is treated as an individual issue.

Getting Started: Awareness emerging. Psychosocial risk concepts appear in policies, with limited data and consultation.

Follow a simple step-by-step process to apply the Playbook in your organisation. Start by identifying your current maturity level, select the right plays for your goals, and use the provided tools to measure progress and maintain momentum over time.

Assess your maturity from the Compliance Maturity Journey Map

Pick a play appropriate for your maturity level, category focus and what you are trying to unlock next.

Ensure you have completed the “Plays to do Before” to increase likelihood of success.

Check you have considered the “Key Success Factors” before commencing.

Follow the instructions including making use of the downloadable resources.

Measure the impact following the recommendations and available tools.

Start again at step 2. You’re on your way – keep the momentum going!
